Maida has three brothers and three sisters and lives with her parents. Maida attends Ben Bella Secondary School. She loves physics and math and wants to study and do well in school in order to improve her family’s standard of living. With a background in science and math she hopes to someday become a pilot. She also hopes to have the opportunity to make the pilgrimage to Mecca some day.

Maida also feels passionately for women’s education. In her interview she said, “Women are the nucleus of society. Behind every successful man is a woman. If you want to educate society, educate the women.”

Salma is number one in her class of 51 students at Ben Bella Secondary School and was the only girl to make A’s in every single class last semester. Salma lives with her parents, her grandmother and her seven siblings, three younger and four older. She enjoys learning science and hopes to one day become a doctor. She said she would use this scholarship to help her family to pay for fees and to make sure the rest of her siblings receive an education.

Rehema lives with both her parents and has many siblings, 7 brothers and 4 sisters. She attends Ben Bella Secondary School where her favorite subjects are Physics, Chemistry and math. She says that by getting a better education she is able to teach her family and friends and raise her family out of poverty. She also explained in the interview that she feels her level of education is not yet high enough and desires the opportunity to improve it.

Rehema said if one day she was able to visit South Africa or the US she would want to learn about the different economic situation present in these countries as well as find out how to reduce the problem of AIDS in Tanzania.

Hadia has 4 older siblings and 1 younger brother. She currently lives with her brother because her mother died not too long ago and her father is too old to work. Her brother paid for her school fees and supplies in the past, but with the scholarship she says her brother will now be able to use the money for basic needs such as meals and clothes for her father and younger brother.

Hadia ranks number 8 out of 51 students at Ben Bella Secondary School. She hopes to become an accountant in the future and continue to increase her education in order to help her family and people who do not have the opportunity to get an education.

Mtumwa is the first born of five. Her parents are separated and before receiving the S4Si scholarship she did not have enough money to ride the daladala (the local bus). Some days she arrived late to school because she had to walk. Nonetheless, she still ranks number 4 in her class of 50 at Ben Bella Secondary School. Her favorite subjects are Biology, Chemistry, Physics and math. She hopes to become a doctor and treat diseases such as Malaria, AIDS and Cholera. In her free time she helps her family with the daily chores at home, does exercise, and plays different sports in order to keep healthy.

If she could travel anywhere she would travel to the US in order to learn how she can help her society deal with diseases.
