Sharifa is the youngest of 9 children. She has 4 older sisters and 4 older brothers. Her father is a farmer and her mother is deceased. Sharifa enjoys physics and chemistry, but her favorite subject is math. Sharifa goal is to become an expert in computers and help people gain access to better jobs.

She admires Kofi Annan because of the security that he provides for her country and she would love to see him visit Zanzibar one day. Sharifa has a positive opinion on state funded education because it stimulates opportunities for higher education. Regarding tourism, Sharifa feels that it is important because it benefits the national income as well as providing jobs for individuals.

Fatma recently turned 16 and is the youngest of three children. She lives in Zanzibar with both her parents whom she looks up to with great admiration. Fatma is first in her class hopes to become a pediatrician and focus on helping children with malaria. Fatma has an inquisitive nature, brilliant work ethic, and continual yearning to learn.

Fatma understands the problems facing Zanzibar and appreciates the tourism it receives as it boosts their economy. More insightful is the fact she realizes how tourism can bridge the gap between Zanzibar and the rest of the world. Her desire to learn from other cultures is shown by her ambition to visit China. Here she wishes to learn their different culture and observe how the students there differ from those in Zanzibar.

Fatma lives with her mother, who is a teacher. She does not know her father because he left when she was a child to marry a younger woman. Fatma worked hard in school and her ranking improved from 27th to 7th in her class. She is studying Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Fatma would like to visit Norway in order to learn about their culture and education system in order to improve the education of people in Zanzibar. She believes in state-funded education because it provides more opportunities. Fatma recognizes both the benefits and disadvantages of tourism having such a big impact on Zanzibar.

Zuwena is one of six children and lives with her mother and her father. Her mother stays at home and her father is a dala dala driver. Zuwena’s favorite subjects are biology and geography. Zuwena hopes to attend university to become a pediatrician.

She is a supporter of state-funded education, as she feels without it many people would have to sell their houses to put students through university. Before the scholarship her family would have been dependent on government funding for her to attend a university. Zuwena would like to travel to Norway because she has heard the citizens have stability and peace in their development. If Zuwena were to travel there, she would like to bring back knowledge to better her own community.

Hajra finished sixth in her class on the first term exams in April. She lives a half hour walk from Ben Bella and thanks S4Si for including transportation costs in the stipend money so she doesn’t have to worry about whether or not she can afford to take the dala dala to school every day. She hopes someday to work in Zanzibar’s Ministry of Education.
