Devike Chawla, Co-Director of Events
Devika Chawla is a sophomore from Cary, NC pursuing a double major in Psychology and Biology, with a minor in Asian Studies. She loves traveling, learning about other cultures, and eating delicious ethnic food. When she's not studying or working on S4Si-related tasks, she can be found running, watching LOST, or just enjoying the lovely Carolina weather with friends. In addition to being involved with S4Si, she is an RA in Joyner, volunteers at the UNC Autism Center, and is involved with Best Buddies. She has been involved with S4Si since the beginning of freshman year and is so excited about making a difference in the lives of these amazingly deserving young women!
Katie Cullen, Co-Director of Events
Katie Cullen is a junior from Raleigh, North Carolina that is majoring in psychology. She plans to attend graduate after graduation in pursuit of a PhD in clinical psychology so that she can be a therapist and work in research. Katie enjoys volunteering, spending time with her best friends, frozen yogurt, sports, and romantic comedies. Although she has only been an S4Si member for tne year, she is extremely passionate about it and looks forward to doing whatever she can to improve an organization with such great goals as a co-director of Events.
Melanie Shivraj, Co-Director of Events
Melanie is from Morrisville, NC and is in her senior year working on a Biology major hoping to move on to Medical school. She really enjoys traveling, reading, shopping and hanging out with friends! Melanie currently works at a cancer research lab at Duke and spends time volunteering at UNC’s hospitals. Melanie is extremely honored to be involved in S4Si and can’t wait to continue to lend a hand to these amazing young women!
April Pullium, Co-Director of Communications
April is a sophomore from Garner, North Carolina. She is currently pursuing a double major in English and Spanish, and she enjoys reading all types of literature. April has volunteered as a tutor since middle school and loves helping others understand the importance of education. She also has a passion or drinking coffee, traveling, writing, and playing the piano. She is looking forward to her second year of involvement with S4Si, as she is thrilled to have found a position in an organization that combines her advocacy for education, staunch feminism, and writing and editing talents.
Maggie O’Brien, Co-Director of Communications
Maggie is a junior from Vienna, Virginia majoring in business. She enjoys cheering for UNC sports, running, and hanging out with friends and family. Although she is new to S4Si, Maggie is thrilled to be a part of such an amazing organization!
Nushmia Khan , Co-Director of Communications
Nushmia is a senior from Cary, North Carolina majoring in multimedia journalism and minoring in Islamic Studies and Arabic. She enjoys photography, videography, travel and religion. Nushmia spent part of last summer working with a women's cooperative in Duzce, Turkey. She also spent the rest of her summer as a marketing intern in Washington, D.C. for a film-making company focused on improving Islam's image in the media. She hopes that her love for multimedia can be of benefit to S4Si in the coming year.
Alison Grady, Co-Director of Outreach
Alison is a junior from Raleigh, North Carolina majoring in Peace, War and defense and minoring in Philosophy, Politics and Economics and Women’s studies. Alison spent all of her Spring 2010 semester in Washington, D.C. as part of the Burch Field Research Seminar, where she interned with the Enough Project, a nonprofit that works to end genocide. Through her work at Enough and with S4Si, Alison has deepened her passion for women's justice and hopes to help establish women’s equality throughout the world as part of her life and career. On campus, Alison is an active member of the Roosevelt Institute, and she loves jogging through the quad in spring. Alison had the privilege of being part of S4Si’s 2010 Summer Delegation to Zanzibar and looks forward to using the knowledge she gained from meeting our scholars to further S4Si’s goals and reach.
Meg Leary, Director of Grants
Meg Leary is a sophomore from Charlotte, North Carolina. She is passionate about cultural awareness and human rights and plans to study Economics and Foreign Languages in her time here at Chapel Hill. She served last year as a Co-Director of Outreach on the Executive Board and looks forward to further involvement with S4Si!
Amanda Gabriel, Director of Alumni Relations
Amanda is a senior from Raleigh, North Carolina and is majoring English. Amanda has been involved in S4Si for four years and was a member S4Si's delegation to Tanzania this summer. When she is not studying or working with S4Si, she enjoys reading, yoga, volunteering, drawing and painting, and UNC sports. Though she is sad this is her final year involved in S4Si, Amanda is thrilled to have such an active role in this organization.
Lawson Kuehnert, Director of Finance
Lawson is a sophomore from Morganton, NC studying History and Economics. In his free time, he enjoys participating in the campus chapter of Reformed University Fellowship (RUF), working with the UNC Honors Program Student Board, tutoring high school students in Chapel Hill, and playing piano. He is very excited to be working with S4Si as Director of Finance and looks forward to increasing international educational opportunities through the organization.

Katherine Novinski, Co-Director of Scholarships
Katherine Novinski is a senior at UNC-Chapel Hill and in her fourth year of involvement with S4Si. She spent the summer after her first year as an S4Si delegate to Zanzibar where she helped to select nine new scholars, volunteered in a girls' dormitory and taught English to secondary school students. She's previously served as Co-Director of Fundraising for S4Si and is excited to be the Director of Scholarships for this next year and help establish S4Si's Mentor program. Katherine loves dark chocolate, running, exploring cities, and meeting new people. She is a Religious Studies and Public Policy major and spent a semester studying in Amsterdam doing a research project on sexuality education in religious schools. She attended an all girls' high school and has a strong passion for girls' education and hopes to establish a career in the education sector in educational leadership and policy.
Liz Willis, Co-Director of Scholarships
Liz, from Polk County, NC, is majoring in History and Public Policy, with a probable minor in Sexuality Studies. She would like to go to law school and pursue international law, hopefully dealing with women's rights or human rights in general. Liz loves UNC, Spanish, languages, traveling, the Blue Ridge Mountains and my dogs. She is so excited to be working with S4Si! I think it is an excellent organization, one that truly gives me the chance to make an impact on the lives of our scholars.
Hampton Neal, Director of Operations
Hampton Neal is a senior and has been involved with S4Si since his first week at Carolina. As a Women’s Studies major and Social and Economic Justice minor, Hampton feels very passionately about the work that S4Si is doing to promote gender equality through increasing access to education in developing communities. In the summer of 2010, he was a part of the Delegation Team that traveled to Zanzibar to select a new class of scholars and to launch the Mentorship Program. Hampton enjoys time with friends, Lady Gaga, and key lime pie…and enjoys them even more combined.
Bryanna Schwartz, Executive Director
Bryanna is a senior Biology major from San Diego, California. She spent the summer of 2008 in Zanzibar, Tanzania selecting scholars and working to improve the scholarship. Last year she interned with Africare, focusing primarily on water sanitation projects in Uganda. Her time in S4Si and abroad has made her interested and passionate about women's education, international development and public health. Outside of S4Si, Bryanna has volunteered at UNC's Hospital, worked in student government, and volunteered at a bilingual preschool. Bryanna plans to pursue a career in public health and medicine. She is excited to work with the directors and members of S4Si to find more ways to support our scholars.
